In fact, native grassland plants have adapted to extreme weather conditions to such an extent that savannas, a subset of grasslands found in Africa, Australia, South America, and India, require seasonal droughts and wildfires to maintain biodiversity.

Food chains describe "what eats what" in an ecosystem. No one food chain exists for a forest food web ecosystem, as many types of woodland ecosystems exist. Within those systems, there are many more intersecting food chains, or food webs. Some basic facts about food chains and the players involved make it possible to see consistent patterns and discover many possible food chains that occur in forest ecosystems. Woodland habitat food chains begin with an autotroph , or "self-feeder," that synthesizes energy from the sun. Cell organelles that are found in most autotrophs, called chloroplasts, act like little factories, forging organic molecules from carbon dioxide and water. While most autotrophs in a woodland habitat food chain are plants, some bacteria, algae and other protists are also autotrophs.
The most important plants in this biome are grasses! Temperate grasslands have some of the darkest, richest soils in the world not in wealth, but in nutrients. People who live in grassland regions often use these soils for farming.
Africa's grassland, or savanna, ecosystem is an open, grass-covered land with small, interspersed trees. Its diverse species play specific and important roles. Food chains trace the transfer of energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem. They are simple and linear, whereas food webs include all of the interconnected food chains in an ecosystem. Food webs must strike a delicate balance to ensure that no one organism becomes overpopulated within an ecosystem.
